The red-lipped batfish or Galápagos batfish (Ogcocephalus darwini) is a fish of unusual morphology found around the Galápagos Islands at depths of 3 to 76 m (10 to 249 ft). (No, it’s not AI. Triple checked)

@stux@mstdn.social anomalocaris existed. Weird is how life rolls. We are hairless bipedal apes, who move by climbing into boxes made of once molten metal, and obtain things by showing little plastic rectangles to each other.

@stux@mstdn.social they remind me of handfish, but they aren't closely related. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handfish

  • @stux@mstdn.social im sorry but it is Ai. And unfortunately I found so many videos that were Ai about this fish. However here’s a link to a video made by a gal who is not Ai so people can see what this creature actually looks like 😹 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Qzpd-U3POxI

@stux@mstdn.social I think the footage itself is AI (there is a TON of AI footage surrounding these little guys, what the heck??) just because the critter in the video doesn't look like a batfish, but more like a mix of different bottom-dwelling aquarium fish. The actual batfish look a bit like frogs with fat, round tails, like other angler fish. But the critter is definitely legit! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qzpd-U3POxI

@stux@mstdn.social OMG, what a freaking, amazing planet we have. "The red-lipped batfish is mainly known for its bright red lips. Batfish are not good swimmers; they use their highly adapted pectoral, pelvic and anal fins to "walk" on the ocean floor." --wiki

@stux@mstdn.social Reminds me a bit of Gurnards, which I've seen walking across the bottoms of bays in Hawaii using specialized fins. They search through the sediment for prey and then spread "wings" to trap them.
