@jschauma@mstdn.social Some sites like that still exist, but they're not promoted by google in search results very well. Kagi has a "small web" tool and focus that ONLY shows you those small web sites.

@jschauma@mstdn.social @dillo@fosstodon.org browser, links, w3m, chawan, and NetSurf are still great options. No, you won't be able to access some sites, But you'll be able to access many sites, and you can bookmark the ones that work well. :)

@jschauma@mstdn.social may I interest you in the Gemini Protocol? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemini_(protocol) sadly I cannot find any newly updated clients for Android, the most recent I use is Buran from 2022 https://f-droid.org/packages/corewala.gemini.buran but I loved the gemini capsules. And I just discovered the writing counterpart, Titan: https://communitywiki.org/wiki/Titan

@jschauma@mstdn.social yeah. remember the "Semantic Web" idea? I liked that. it was the idea that HTML tags ought to be symbolic in nature rather than explicitly formatted. that way, the interpretation of the symbols could be left up to the client-side software. so instead of minutely specifying typefaces and colors and spacing and such, you use functional tags.

@jschauma@mstdn.social I've just looked at my first site. Started 1 January 1998. Abandoned at some point after 30 March 2000, when the "Whats New" page announced "Reworked all source (html) files for the site. They are now HTML4.0 compliant and use a style sheet." The site documented all the tricks and tips I could offer on the "Recorder" accessory found in Windows v3.11 for Workgroups. Tried running it discover that back then Internet Explorer must have been case insensitive. My file naming style was somewhat inconsistent. If there's unbelievable interest I'll correct the mixed case file names and upload it somewhere. #html #stylesheet #windows #workgroups #recorder #internetexplorer #history #www
