What is the relationship between the PCRE and PCRE2 libraries? Is one an API version 1.0 and the second an API version 2.0, or is PCRE2 a hostile fork, or is PCRE2 a new ground-up reimplementation with a different API by a different team?

@mcc@mastodon.social AFAIK, PCRE1 has been basically frozen for over a decade only fixing occassional bugs, while PCRE2 is where new features are being developed.
