That 54 hours would include charging time but not stopping overnight to sleep/etc.
Driving NYC to LA in a gas car would take around 42 hours of actual driving, plus gas stops...if you assume ~30 MPG, a 14-gallon tank and stopping for gas every ~300 miles, that'd be perhaps another hour.

Driving in a gas car at 30 MPG would be around 93 gallons of gas x ~$4.37/gallon (nat'l average today) or ~$407 in gas. In summary: EV: 54 hours (includes bathroom breaks during charging stops), $315 in electricity Gas car: 43 hours (not including bathroom breaks), $407 in gas
