That 54 hours would include charging time but not stopping overnight to sleep/etc. Driving NYC to LA in a gas car would take around 42 hours of actual driving, plus gas stops...if you assume ~30 MPG, a 14-gallon tank and stopping for gas every ~300 miles, that'd be perhaps another hour.
